With CBD becoming ever more popular and being more readily available its important to know what it is and how it can affect you and your wellbeing.

I've been asked many times to use CBD oils, creams and balms within my sessions however my reservations are regarding the legality surrounding this product as I'm not covered by my insurance company or professional body as this substance has not been tested for long term effects on the body.

The latin name for HEMP is Cannabis Sativa. Hemp and Cannabis come from the same source. Cannabidiol (CBD) is completely under UK Law. It is extracted from cannabis plants that are grown separately to those cultivated for drug use. Hemp is considered a completely legal product in the UK but the recreational version cannabis or weed/marijuana as it is more colloquially known is not.

Cannabis is considered to be strain of Cannabis Sativa with THC above .2%. CBD oil is harvested from Hemp flowers. CBD oil is legal; as long as it is made from approved EU strains which has been chosen due to their low THC content.

Currently under UK law the maximum legal limit of THC content of hemp is 0.2%

A statement was issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in 2016 that products containing CBD used for medical purposes are considered as a medicine subject to standard licensing requirements..

THC and CBD have the same molecular structure which are only arranged slightly differently and they are both similar to your own body’s endocannabinoids.

Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis, the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment. The endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating a variety of physiological and cognitive effects.

CBD is used to help with various conditions such as seizure, inflammation, pain, inflammatory bowel disease, nausea, migraines, depression, anxiety, etc . So far studies show that any side effects of CBD are likely to be the result of drug interactions.

Cannabinoids like THC and CBD are stored in the body’s fat. They can show up on drug tests for several days or weeks after you use them. Not every drug test will be able to detect CBD, but CBD-sensitive tests are available. Most standard drug tests will look for chemicals related to THC, so THC or marijuana use might show up on a screening. Likewise, hemp can produce some THC in addition to CBD, so a test could be positive for THC even if you’ve not used it.

THC , the compound found in the cannabis plant which gives you the feeling of euphoria or high is known to have the following effects: increased heart rate, coordination problems, dry mouth, red eyes, slower reaction times, memory loss. High use of THC can have long term negative psychiatric effects. The use of the THC compound increases the risk for some psychiatric disorders.
